PETROLIA, ON: The Petrolia Squires today finalized their roster in advance of the 2022-23 Western Ontario Athletic Association (WOAA) Senior AA hockey season. The Squires will open the season at home on Saturday, October 8 against the Creemore Coyotes, puck drop at 7:00pm. The Greenwood Recreation Centre will host 10 regular season home games (eight Fridays and two Saturdays), as the Squires look to improve on last years tenth place finish in the twelve-team league.
The team roster currently sits at 26 players, representing many of the top former junior, college, and professional players from across Lambton County. Leading the team will be the return of the team’s entire leadership core, including, captain Jesse Ferguson (F), and alternative captains Kyler Keating (D) and Ryan Fraser (D).
New to this year’s roster are Connor McCormack (F), former junior player Cole Harris (D), hockey veteran Brandon Merritt (F), and former OHL and CIS star Brandon Biggers (F). These new additions are bolstered by veterans returning to the squad after brief absences from the team, including, Kraig Wright (F), Adam Arseneault (F), Ryan Trottier (F), and goaltender Brandon Campbell.
The rest of the high-powered forward group will consist of returning players TJ Harris, Curtis Helps, Jack Hackett, Jared Pageau, and Corey Pawley, while being highlighted by last years’ top scorer’s Isaac McLean and Kole Keating. The backend includes several large defensemen in Steve Farlow, Thomas Moxley, and Connor McKinnon, and the mobile, the puck-moving Sam McCormack.
“We expect the team to compete for the Senior AA Championship this upcoming season,” said general manager Tim Martin. “We believe this years’ version of the Petrolia Squires will bring the most competitive, hard-fought, and entertaining hockey to Lambton County that any fan can experience.”
“From top to bottom this years’ team has depth that few teams in the league are able to replicate, including perhaps the best three-member goaltending core,” said fifth-year head coach Craig Prudom. “Last year we struggled to score at times, but from our first to our fourth line, there is no doubt that we will be able to put the puck in the net this upcoming season. We have high expectations for this group of young men, and based on pre-season practices it is obvious that the team is eager to prove their worth on the ice”
